Our Mission

HAVEN Free Clinic is dedicated to improving access to health care for uninsured and underinsured individuals by:
  • Providing the uninsured of New Haven with free primary care, wellness education and assistance in securing health coverage.
  • Introducing students to the challenges of managing patient care with limited resources.
  • Researching barriers to health care access.

Our History

In the spring of 2004, a group of Yale health profession students assembled under the shared desire to focus their enthusiasm for serving the community while utilizing their health care skills and knowledge. The resolution of that initial assembly was to evaluate the need in New Haven for a student-run free clinic.

The group made two important determinations:
  1. No stationary free clinic existed.
The only consistent source of free medical care in New Haven was the mobile Yale Community Health Care Van.
  2. A growing population of New Haven residents lack access to medical care.
Although the total number of uninsured people is elusive, current health care and census statistics reveal that New Haven possesses an excess of risk factors correlating to uninsured status.

About HAVEN

HAVEN Free Clinic is run by Yale health professions students in partnership with the Fair Haven Community Health Center. Our model is unique in its inclusion of students across the disciplines of medicine, nursing, physician's associates, and public health.

Since opening our doors in November, 2005, we have conducted over 200 patient visits. Patients are seen by teams of senior and junior students with guidance from faculty preceptors. Currently, we see an average of 10 patients per week.

HAVEN operates Saturdays from 9a-12p out of the Fair Haven Community Health Center. Our programs are targeted to Fair Haven residents and are supported entirely by donations of time, services, and dollars.
